The activity developed by Porto Digital is based on three fundamental pillars:

1. Technology

Responsible for the development and maintenance of the communication infrastructure, with more than 4,000 km of optical fiber installed throughout the city, enabling the provision of public services to citizens, including free Wi-Fi access.

2. Innovation and Experimentation

Contributing to the development of public services and policies through a co-creation and active participation model, acting as an acceleration toolbox that brings together Innovation Management tools—both for the internal capacity building of municipal teams and for promoting innovation as a driver of the City’s transformation.

3. Partnerships

Ensuring the development of international networks and partnerships, fostering a dynamic ecosystem based on a continuous commitment to innovation.

Urban Dynamics Indicator

The Urban Dynamics Indicator (IDU) is a tool developed by Porto Digital that integrates urban data to measure the city's daily activity, supporting more efficient and sustainable municipal decisions.

European Innovation Academy

The European Innovation Academy is the world's largest academic programme for technological entrepreneurship and will take place in Porto between 2022 and 2026. The result of a collaboration between Porto Digital, the Municipality of Porto and the University of Porto, the initiative positions the city as an international hub for innovation, talent and start-ups.

Intelligent Cities Challenge (ICC)

The Intelligent Cities Challenge (ICC) is one of the European Commission’s largest initiatives supporting European cities in their green and digital twin transition. In the ICC second edition, the city of Porto maintains its leading role, joining a group of 10 mentor cities that will be responsible for guiding 64 cities – the core cities. In this new two-year journey, Porto will assist partner cities in developing impactful strategies and innovative solutions through Local Green Deals (LGD), at the forefront of the green and digital transition. The new edition will build on the success of the previous ICC edition (2020-22) and the Digital Cities Challenge (2018-20) and provide an extensive high-level network, a solid methodological framework and strong support mechanisms. In the first phase of ICC (2020-2022), 1.9 billion euros were allocated to ICC actions and 247 million euros in public funding from EU, national and regional sources were mobilised, facilitating 336 actions planned by the 136 cities. Hackacity

Hackacity is a hackathon promoted by Porto Digital that challenges the community to use open data to create innovative solutions that impact the city. Since 2015, the event has brought together experts and enthusiasts to tackle urban challenges, promoting innovation, citizenship, and digital rights.

Porto Free Wi-Fi

Porto Free Wi-Fi is an initiative of the Municipality of Porto, in collaboration with Porto Digital, which provides free internet access in public spaces throughout the city. This network promotes digital inclusion, facilitates access to information and reinforces Porto's position as a smart and connected city.

City Café

City Café is a Porto Innovation Hub programme that promotes informal conversations about innovation, technology and the city. In a relaxed atmosphere, experts and participants come together to discuss ideas and share experiences, strengthening collaboration in Porto's innovation ecosystem.
